Soms zijn mensen verbaasd wanneer een vrouw trompet speelt, maar voor zangeres en virtuoos trompettiste Jennifer Hartswick is het de natuurlijkste zaak van de wereld. Luister hier haar Songline Choice.

Jennifer Hartswick werd geboren in een grote familie van koperblazers in een piepklein dorpje in de bossen van Vermont en zowel haar tante als grootmoeder speelden trompet.

"I was a kid who got the pleasure of running around the fields, swinging on the tire swing and singing at the top of my lungs with nobody to bother me, because there wasn’t a neighbor around! So I really got to discover who I was as a kid before being in any sort of public eye, which I think is really important.”

Jennifer Hartswick

Jennifer toert zo’n 250 dagen per jaar. Ze heeft inmiddels twee solo albums gemaakt, Ocean Floor (2011) en Nexus (2018), ze vormt een duo met gitarist Nick Cassarino én is sinds 18 jaar vast lid van de band van Trey Anastasio, oprichter en gitarist van Phish.

“The core of what I do is that I have the privilege of spreading joy every time I go to work. That is so much more powerful than sitting around, dwelling on all the lousy things that are happening. Just go do the thing that you were born to do, that really brings you joy, and find a way to give back.”
